Last week we heard the sad news of the death of Joan Laurance who co-founded the charity The Family Holiday Association with her late husband Patrick.  She was 98.  The charity, which was founded in 1975, was the first charity I worked with when I had left the BBC and set up sounddelivery. The Family Holiday Association supports some of our most vulnerable families to ensure that they get a much needed break.

I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Patrick and Joan on several occasions and interviewing them about their work. They were passionate campaigners and worked tirelessly to help others.  Using their experience of losing a child and being offered a place to recuperate with a friend, they have changed thousands of lives.   I also had the opportunity to meet the families they worked with. On several occasions I would find myself in Skegness or other locations recording interviews with them as we walked along the beach.  Hearing children talk about the first time they’d seen the sea or their thoughts on having a holiday was magical.

I wanted to share this interview I recorded with Joan many years ago which highlights the incredible legacy of her work.

I also wanted to share this slideshow that featured Patrick that was played at his memorial service.

And finally this is probably one of my favourite interviews that I’ve recorded over the years.  Close your eyes and listen to this interview with Liam and picture yourself on holiday alongside his family.

Thinking of all the team at the FHA.
