Over the last few months sounddelivery has been running a series of storytelling workshops in partnership with the charity Little Village, funded by the Big Lottery Fund.  Little Village was set up in August 2015 by Sophia Parker and provides good quality baby clothes and equipment, donated by local families, to local families that need them.  Their ethos is for communities to support each other. They now have hubs in Wandsworth, Camden and Southwark and are now, sadly, providing a lifeline for families experiencing poverty.

Mothers who are supported by Little Village were invited to take part in workshops to build their confidence and basic skills in video, audio, blogging and photography. The workshops also gave the women a safe space to share their experiences and insights on issues that they were facing from homelessness, to poverty, mental ill health and post-natal depression.   They also had the opportunity to meet Jenny Longden, Social Affairs Producer at Channel 4 News to share ideas for future reports and how they’d like to see the issues they experience addressed by the media.

This has been a pilot workshop and we learnt a great deal doing it.   What is clear is that their stories are invaluable if we are going to get a real picture of the issues we need to address as a society. The provision of childcare through the funding was essential as it gave the women a calm space to think and be completely involved with the knowledge that their children and babies were being taken care of. The women have learnt new skills but also built a new support network and new friendships.

We have seen how their confidence has grown throughout the time we’ve worked with them and we look forward to supporting them informally as they continue their storytelling journey.  There are some exciting plans in the pipeline and we look forward to sharing those with you.

“It was such a lovely experience for me to go and I felt good to tell my story. It was such an emotional experience to see what the other mums go through when mums have experience violence and homelessness.  it was good to see how strong they seem and it felt good to see them smile.”
Vicky

“Being a part of Storytelling, Little Village has given me the experience to share my truth and my struggles. I have had a safe space to express how I feel and to also share my opinions on equal rights in parenting, as a single mother.”
Daisy
