We hope you’ve had a great week.  We were thrilled to launch the first of our Being the Story 2017 talks, Nick and Rachael are both working to challenge the status quo in their sectors. Nick wants the social care sector to think different about people with learning disabilities to harness their strengths and get them into employment. Rachael asks where are our Working Class leaders? and how can we challenge class inequality in the UK today. Watch, subscribe and share with your networks.

We’ve gathered all the interesting and exciting new happenings in the worlds of storytelling and charity communications and fundraising. So grab a cup of tea, put on a pair of headphones and enjoy this weeks storytelling highlights.

1.Raped: My Story
Brought to us by Lambent Productions, Raped: My Story broadcast on Wednesday evening was powerful watching. The documentary film gave a platform to 10 survivors of rape, nine women and one man, to share their stories. Only one of the 10 survivors saw their rapists convicted, this film gave a face and a voice to the people behind the statistics. It was difficult watching at times, but shared such important experiences and it was great to see Channel 5 host a live debate around the #Metoo campaign following the film. We’re thrilled that Emma Wakefield, Managing Director of Lambent Productions will be leading a masterclass onWorking with a Production Company at #SMEX18. She’ll explore how we can share stories around difficult issues, gaining trust, access and consent and balancing the needs of a filmmaker with those of the individuals involved. You can find out more about our masterclasses here. If you haven’t watched it yet, Raped: My Story is a must-watch.

2.Fight Hate with Rights
RightInfo are a dynamic Human Rights charity who are leading the way in putting a spotlight on human rights in an accessible and exciting way. Last month they carried out an impressive crowdfunder 292% of their target and have turned around a short film sharing three powerful stories from genocide survivors. It’s all part of a campaign they’ve launched to #FightHatewithRights to tackle extremism by building support for human rights. RightsInfo Founder Adam Wagner and Eric Murangwa, Ruth Barnett and Kemal Pervanic who featured in the film were interviewed on Victoria Live this week to share the message of the campaign. Find out more here.

3.The Truth About Muslim Marriage
The Truth About Muslim Marriage, a Channel 4 documentary produced by our friends at True Vision TV, shared the stories of some of the many Muslim women in Britain that are unaware that their marriages aren’t legally recognised. The women share their experiences and the impact that having no legal protection has had on their lives. We found it so eye-opening, an issue that we were unaware of and it seemed that a lot of Muslim women were also unaware so it was brilliant to see this have a light shone on it to a wide audience. We were thrilled to have the award-winning director of the film Anna Hall lead a masterclass at the Social Media Exchange 2017 SMEX17 on Telling Difficult Stories.

4.#ShavetheDay
If you came to Being the Story 2017 there’s no doubt in our minds that you’ll remember The Geezers. The East-end Older Men’s Network took the stage to challenge our perceptions of ageing and to show how they’re combatting loneliness in the community through campaigning, socialising and more. It was amazing to see them in this short film shared by Age UK for the #ShavetheDay campaign. On 7 Dec barbers around the country will be offering free services and treatments to older men in their communities in a bid to tackle loneliness for @ShaveTheDayUK. Watch and it share the news!

 5.Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize
The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition opened at the National Portrait Gallery last Thursday. It is the leading international photographic portrait competition featuring work from leading professionals and talent amateurs alike. The breath-taking winning photograph was taken by César Dezfuli of Amadou Sumalia a Mali refugee rescued from the Mediterranean Sea. It was brilliant to see so many of the photographs selected covering important social issues and taken by and for NGOs. It’s on until February do try and see it.

A Special Extra:
Today is the launch of the Choir with Purpose’s Christmas Album ‘Stand Together’. Choirs with Purpose is a collective of 12 singing groups for whom ‘music reaches beyond the everyday to share their messages of triumph over adversity’. The choirs include the Missing People Choir seen on Britain’s Got Talent who delivered an outstanding (and emotional) performance at Being the Story in October, the chart-topping NHS Choir of Greenwich and Lewisham, the UK Hospices Choir and more. Do listen and buy their album – a great Christmas present and way to support some brilliant organisations.
