Telling My Story for the Children Who are Afraid to Tell You Theirs

Through our work we get to meet and connect with many incredible individuals with powerful stories to tell. In this guest vlog Siobhan Pyburn shares her experiences of telling her story of child sexual abuse, and how this has motivated her to set-up her social enterprise the Beam Project to support those who have endured child sexual abuse, to speak up about this still stigmatised issue and to find ways of making the system better for vulnerable children.

Siobhan was first given a platform to share her experiences of child sexual abuse in 2008, at the age of 17 as a ‘Fixer’, Fixers is a project from the charity Public Service Broadcasting Trust that supports young people to use their past to fix the future. They gave her a platform to support other young victims of sexual abuse.

We met Siobhan earlier this year at the Social Media Exchange where she was supported by funders the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to attend and share in a day of digital storytelling skills. She has been funded as part of their Ideas and Pioneers Fund which funds people with unusual or radical ideas that will improve the life chances of others in the UK.  PHF funding supported Siobhan to create training resources around csa and continue to produce a weekly video on her YouTube channel, discussing survivor lead approaches to recovery.

Siobhan has recorded this powerful vlog for our sounddelivery blog to share her insights and experiences of storytelling, and why she thinks it is so important to speak out about child sexual abuse.
