Welcome to our Storytelling Highlights, this where we share what we’ve seen, heard or read about and would like to share with you from the worlds of charity communications and digital storytelling and we’ve come across some powerful firsthand storytelling this week. So it’s time to put the kettle on, grab a pair of headphones and enjoy.

 1. Being Mum and Dad
Earlier this week Rio Ferdinand shared his experiences of bereavement and family life after the loss of his wife to cancer a year ago in Being Mum and Dad. The documentary followed Rio as he met other families coping with bereavement and looked at what help is available for parents and children. It was a powerful film and really showed the impact of sharing firsthand experiences, and we’re sure through this Rio will have helped many other bereaved families.

2. Amazing Humans
This week BBCThree launched the Idris Elba takeover, a series of documentaries, videos, drama and comedy curated by him. Our favourite feature is Amazing Humans, a series of videos sharing the inspirational stories of individuals that have overcome difficulties to achieve their goals. Take a look at Zoe, the line-backers story now after suffering from an eating disorder, she’s now more confident than ever.

3. Epilicia –
How Epilepsy gave me a new nickname
Last week we delivered a practical storytelling training day on case studies and blogging for the charity Voices of Stoke to. A blogging exercise lead to some of the most powerful and personal blogs that we’ve read in a long time. Which will be published over the next few weeks and which we promise to share.  The session prompted  Alicia to share her experiences of receiving a sudden epilepsy diagnosis and the impact it has had on her life and her work. We wanted to share her moving blog with you. Do let her know what you think when you’ve read it. @AliciaJSimmons

4. The Power and Peril of Stories
In a time of fake news and alternative facts BBC4’s A Point of View discusses the power and peril of stories. As we know storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to communicate your message but when it comes to politics we must look to the facts that back up a story. An interesting listen.

5. #Hydeat50
At sounddelivery we always try to encourage charities to use authentic firsthand storytelling and make the most of the passion of their supporters. A great way to do this is through crowdsourcing your content. Hyde Housing are celebrating 50 years with their #Hydeat50 campaign encouraging us to all share what’s behind #myfrontdoor with a selfie.

And finally, this week we were sent an exciting job opportunity at Crisis, the homelessness charity.  They are recruiting for a stories journalist and are actively seeking someone with experience of being homeless.  The role will involve the person helping to create a campaign to change the way people think about homelessness. It will also involve helping to support others to share their experiences, and to amplify these online.  What is key is you don’t need to have been a journalist, just good writing skills and a passion for story-gathering and storytelling.  Sounds great – we look forward to hearing about the successful applicant.  Do spread the word

Do keep us updated with what you think I should be finding out more about.

And if you like what you read – do help us by sharing it and spreading the word
