YHA programmes and activities provide opportunities for disadvantaged young people to broaden their horizons and explore the wider world. The work we’ve done with the organisation is varied and includes two films, an audio slideshow, a series of audio features highlighting the Breaks4Kids fund, a regional radio campaign to raise awareness around the School Trips initiative and podcast training for staff.

Project: short film production

We’ve produced a number of short films for YHA, showcasing their work with disadvantaged young people across the UK.

In 2007, YHA commissioned us to create a 10-minute film about their work with disadvantaged young people, focusing on the ‘Do it For Real’ camps. Building the Next Generation combined interviews with YHA programme participants and staff with footage of young people taking part in camp activities. The film was shown at YHA’s annual general meeting and has since been used widely to promote the organisation internally to staff and to supporters and stakeholders outside the organisation.

In 2008 we produced the YHA and Young People film, to raise awareness of the range of services that the charity provides, from the School Trips and Breaks 4 Kids initiatives to their new hostel in central London. We accompanied a school group to a YHA hostel in Sussex and filmed the pupils over the course of the day, capturing their enthusiasm as they learnt about the wildlife, geography and geology of the South Downs. We also travelled to Derbyshire filming young people at YHA Edale. The finished film showcases YHA’s commitment to enhancing the lives of young people, with captivating case studies and powerful testimonies from youth leaders and YHA staff.

Project: Breaks4Kids audio feature

Breaks4Kids is a charitable fund run by the YHA. They make it possible for underprivileged children, who might otherwise be left behind, to be included in trips and activities by funding up to 50 per cent of the cost of their accommodation and food at a YHA centre.

We were invited to produce an audio feature highlighting the Breaks 4 Kids initiative, to be played at an event at the House of Commons. Our reporter spent two days with 34 young people who had been on a break subsidised by YHA, gathering views the young people, their parents and teachers. We also trained some of the young people as audio reporters.

The Breaks 4 Kids feature provided a great success and the YHA went on to create a CD out of the material, for use in awareness raising and fundraising activities.

Project: audio slideshow

The YHA also commissioned us to produce an audio slideshow that would illustrate the impact the charity has had on young people today and in the past. Generation to Generation brings together views of young and old people towards YHA and the opportunities it provides.

Project: YHA’s £1 million give-away

In 2008 we delivered a regional broadcast campaign to raise awareness of YHA’s School Trips. We set up interviews with local radio stations around the country, with a particular focus on BBC Radio Breakfast programmes. The interviews coincided with a growing and substantial amount in the Breaks 4 Kids fund, which provides grants for disadvantaged children to accompany their friends on residential trips – by the launch of the campaign the fund had reached £1 million.

We managed the entire broadcast campaign, from press release to selling in the story to radio stations. We also offered stations local case studies where available. The campaign produced a huge amount of coverage across BBC and commercial radio stations, with many stations interviewing case studies and going on location to schools and YHA sites.

What the YHA says

“Choosing sounddelivery is like temporarily recruiting extra expert staff to your team and that’s how it should be. It gave us more people to call upon who genuinely cared about what they were doing for us. Throughout the project they provided great support, expertise, energy and boundless enthusiasm.” Paul Fearn, Communications Manager, YHA
