Social Media Basics – Tuesday 11th May

This one-day practical workshop will explore the opportunities that social media/Web 2.0 offers your organisation. The day will focus on free or inexpensive applications and provide easy ways for you to use new media. The course will help you understand the jargon and will offer practical guidance on areas including blogging, social networks, podcasting, wikis and social bookmarks.
Please note: As we will be working with PCs anyone who attends this workshop must have a reasonable level of IT literacy. You will need to use email regularly, surf the internet to find information, be confident using word processing software.

Practical Exercise One – Blogging – Why Blog?
Context and Applications
Different ways to use blogs, how to set up your own blog, importance of content.
What works? Case studies. Uploading photographs, links and tags
Sustaining a blog
Practical Exercise Two – How to create a Social Network
Context and applications. My Space, Bebo, Facebook, Ning
Social Bookmarking – What is it? How can it be used? Why is it useful?
Practical Exercise Three – Podcasting + Video
What is a podcast? Why podcast? How to create a podcast.
Audio and video applications. Basic editing tools
