Museum & Heritage Network for Warwickshire, Coventry & Solihull: Social media training
Mar 31st, 2009 • Category: Case studies
Brief
Glynis Powell, Museum Development Officer for Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull, wanted to build the social media skills of people working within museums and heritage groups in the area.
She knew that staff within the network were particularly keen to learn more about social networking as a way to creatively engage their audiences. The challenge she faced was that the individuals who needed training had widely varying levels of knowledge and skills on the subject.
Our brief was to create a training workshop that met the diverse needs of participants, giving everyone the skills and confidence to harness the potential of new media to connect with a broader range of stakeholders.
Approach
We developed a bespoke two-part training course for 20 staff from 16 museums and heritage organisations. The workshops included practical exercises such as setting up a blog and social networks.
We used relevant and engaging case studies throughout the sessions to demonstrate the potential of new media for the museums and heritage sector.
Outcome
We believe there are some great opportunities for museums, archives and heritage organisations to use new media to build closer relationships with audiences, so we were very excited to have a chance to deliver practical hands-on training to people working in this sector.
What the Museum and Heritage Network says
“The participants on both days were especially impressed by the tutors’ depth of preparation. Each museum now has a really good understanding of all the possibilities open to them and have got a handle on what is practical to their own circumstances and capacity. These two days are only a beginning, each site will develop from here in a different way, but I know that sounddelivery will be on hand for bits of advice and some brilliant ideas!” Glynis Powell, Museum Development Officer for Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull
“The training was professsional, engaging, hands-on. The trainers were approachable and inspirational.” Workshop participant
“Introduced me to new social media sites I never knew existed but could definitely make use of! I’ll be setting up a Ning page for my organisation for sure!” Ruth Ashburner, Property administrator, The National Trust – Charlecote Park
