BIG Lottery Fund: Podcast training
Jun 22nd, 2010 • Category: Case studies
Brief
The BIG Lottery Fund is responsible for awarding half of the total money raised by the National Lottery to good causes. A vital part of its work is telling the public how organisations have benefited from lottery funding and where they have put the money to good use.
Keen to explore new ways of telling these stories, the organisation asked us to develop a series of podcasting workshops for their communications, marketing and regional teams.
Approach
Using our Powerful Podcasting workshop as a starting point, we created a tailor-made training workshop that met the exact needs of the BIG Lottery Fund teams. The workshops covered the interviewing process, how to collect sound effects and audio wildtrack, and how to use editing software to turn recorded material into high quality podcasts.
We wanted the BIG Lottery Fund staff to get relevant, practical experience, so we took them to visit lottery-funded projects as part of the workshops. These visits gave each participant a chance to record live interviews about the grant application process and how the money was being spent.
Outcome
Between November 2009 and May 2010, we trained more than 40 BIG Lottery Fund staff from all over the country. Our training gave participants the knowledge and confidence to start using podcasting as a way to engage the public in the work of the BIG Lottery Fund.
What the BIG Lottery Fund says
“My team and I spent and enjoyable and informative day with sounddelivery. At the end of the session we were able to start producing audio content right away, and some of the team have already started based on the training they were given last week. I can highly recommend the team for their enthusiasm and practical approach, and look forward to putting the lessons learnt into practice.” John Fellows, Head of Communications and Marketing, Big Lottery Fund Scotland
