The Fix, #16Days, Employable Me and more in our Storytelling Highlights

This week has been campaign crazy! We’ve loved seeing storytelling across social media, news, radio and TV for #16days of activism to end violence against women, and for #GivingTuesday one of the UK’s biggest days for giving. We celebrated Nominet Trust’s #NT100 5th year and launched Dom Raban’s Being the Story Talk. Dom shared the personal story behind his Nominet Trust funded app aiming to transform children’s hospital experiences, watch it here.  We’ve gathered up our picks of all of the interesting and exciting new happenings in the worlds of storytelling and charity communications and fundraising in one place. So grab a cup of tea, put on a pair of headphones and enjoy this week’s storytelling highlights.

1.The Fix: Women & Addiction
This week Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour launched The Fix: Women & Addiction, a new Radio 4 series putting a spotlight on women and addiction. On Tuesday morning the programme was introduced through sharing some of the moving interviews with women experiencing addictions, followed by a discussion with Lecturer Ian Hamilton, Agenda Director Katharine Sacks Jones, Dr Sally Marlow and producer Milly Chowles. This year we were commissioned by Lankelly Chase to work with a group of women who published a book of stories, poetry and illustrations that document their experiences of addiction, mental health issues and abuse that lead them to street prostitution. We look forward to hearing the series unfold.

2.#16Days
Last Saturday was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (#IDEVAW2017), which marked the start of 16 days of activism. During this time powerful stories are shared to challenge the stigma around abuse, and give women a platform to share their experiences in order to bring an end to domestic abuse. We’ve seen lots of noteworthy examples of impactful storytelling, but one that really caught our eye was from Bromley and Croydon Women’s Aid who we were honoured to lead a storytelling training day for last week. They are publishing a series of blogs from the viewpoint of a woman in an abusive relationship, sharing consecutive posts illustrating coercive control and it’s impact. Find them here, and do share your stories for #16days with us.

3.Employable Me
Broadcast on Monday, Employable Me followed three job seekers who have the odds stacked up against them due to a disability. The BBC2 documentary follows Ryan diagnosed with severe Tourette’s and businessman and journalist Andy who after suffering a stroke was left partially paralysed, aphasia makes his speech muddled and communication a struggle. What it really showed was that given the right opportunities, people can draw on their strengths and offer something unique to an organisation it’s about giving people a chance. At Being the Story, Nick O’Shea shared his story of setting up Ignition Brewery, a brewery that employ individuals with learning disabilities that plays to their strengths rather than focusing on what they may not be able to do.

4.#GivingTuesday
We love Giving Tuesday, the perfect antidote for Black Friday, and now Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday is a great opportunity to fundraise, do some good, and celebrate the positive impact charities and social enterprises are having. One example we loved was from Age UK who showed us there are many different ways to give, starting with small acts of kindness that could make a huge difference to an older person. Lots of corporates also got involved, even dating app Tinder launched a #GivingTuesday campaign with great results.

5.Insight Awards
This week we were honoured to be invited once again to attend and speak at the Expert Citizens Insight Awards. We love the work that the Expert Citizens do and have been privileged to support Darren Murrinas, the Founder to share his story. The event is the biggest event of its type designed and delivered by people with lived experience. It was a brilliant day putting a spotlight on multiple and complex needs and celebrating the brilliant work being done in that area. We were also proud to see Amanda and Susie from An Untold Story take the stage to share their stories. You can look at some of the highlights from the day on the #InsightAwards2017 hashtag.
