We hope you’ve had a great week, we’re thrilled to say over half of our Being the Story super early-bird tickets have gone already with some really brilliant organisations attending the day, don’t miss out book your place now. Our storytelling highlights this week features powerful storytelling on a range of important issues from homelessness, to addiction to mental health. What is clear has been when people with firsthand experience of an issue are given the opportunities to tell their stories in their own ways and in their own words it is only then we can fully understand what they face.     So here is what is on our radar.

1.#24HoursatYRP
Over the past few months we’ve been honoured to work with Woking homelessness charity York Road Project leading storytelling workshops to help their clients share their experiences. On Wednesday York Road Project took to Twitter for #24HoursatYRP to show what a day at the organisation looks like, sharing stories and insights around the different services and support they offer and the invaluable activities clients can participate in. What was also brilliant to see was the different perspectives of clients, staff, volunteers and other organisations who support the work York Road Project do, take a look at the highlights here.

2.Addicted Parents
Such a powerful, brave and important documentary putting a spotlight on families supported by Phoenix Futures as they fought to overcome their addiction and keep their children. Such difficult stories were shared and we saw the challenges faced by both the parents and children, and also the staff there to support them. What became clear is the long-term impact that trauma such as from being abused can have on a person and their journey to addiction. Do try and catch up with it here, important viewing.

3.UK’s First Deaf Poetry Slam
We love this, such a creative and inclusive idea that will provide a great opportunity for talented, creative deaf poets to share their work on stage. In the first event of it’s kind, poets took the stage to battle it out in British sign language. The BBC shared this feature on one of the contestants, 20-year-old Honesty Willoughby from Bristol who entered the competition to perform for the first time. Poetry is quickly becoming one of our new favourite storytelling devices as we worked with York Road Project clients to share their experiences of homelessness through poetry, listen here.

4.Growing Up Gay
Singer Olly Alexander and BBC Three have teamed up to produce Growing Up Gay, a film exploring why the gay community is more vulnerable to mental health issues. He shares his personal experiences dealing with his own depression. Olly is a powerful voice on mental health, bullying and LGBT+ rights and has used his music to celebrate queer identities. He meets and speaks with young people as they face their own journeys battling mental health issues and asks what can be done.

5.2017 – The Year of the Stories
We’re always looking at different ways to tell stories. 2016 was all about Live video, we saw huge promotion from Facebook of Facebook Live content and charities took to it to put a spotlight on their cause, one of our favourites was RNLI’s post-Saving Lives at Seas Q&As. But 2017 has seen the rise of the Stories. We saw Snapchat stories adopted by Instagram and Facebook, with people sharing vertical, chronological, 10-second videos and photos with layers of information like locations and time stamps on top and each segment disappears after 24hours. Charity Water, Oxfam and Do Something org were early adopters, find out more about stories here.

Do keep us updated with what you think I should be finding out more about.

And if you like what you read – do help us by sharing it and spreading the word
